The employees of Emanuel Medical Center feel that it's our calling to serve those that are sick or injured, both mentally and physically. We genuinely love caring for those who are in need. We have a rich history of innovation, compassion, and teamwork that began when we opened in 1952. In 1970, a 49-bed long-term care facility was opened as the Emanuel County Nursing Home. Twenty-four private rooms were added to the hospital in 1972. In 1983, extensive renovations were completed that touched almost every patient care area of the hospital and added a seven-bed intensive care unit. Additionally, a $2.1 million renovation project was completed in 1993, which gave EMC a new exterior as well as a new interior. On January 1, 1996, the name was officially changed to Emanuel Medical Center. In 2002, plans to undergo another major renovation and building project developed. Groundbreaking for the $14 million expansion was held on November 6, 2003. Funding for the project was generated through hospital reserves and money from bond financing.
In 2015, our 10-bed Senior Behavioral Health Center was constructed using a USDA grant. In 2017, our 10-bed unit was expanded to a 15-bed unit that serves patients ages 55 and older. In our state of the art unit, we offer individualized care in a warm, supportive atmosphere to those with behavioral health needs.
In addition to these inpatient services, EMC offers a full spectrum of outpatient radiology, respiratory, surgical and laboratory services. Our physician practice division now includes 8 area practices including family practice, internal medicine, and general/orthopedic surgery. In addition, our visiting physician clinics support a variety of specialists including cardiology, ophthalmology, and neurology.
Owned by the County and governed by the Emanuel County Hospital Authority, Emanuel Medical Center employs over 420 people and operates as a not-for-profit facility whose operations are completely funded by revenues generated through patient services. The Authority is comprised of eight citizens of Emanuel County plus the current Chief of Medical Staff.
Emanuel Medical Center is fully accredited by the DNV-GL. This means that we voluntarily submit to extensive evaluations of our compliance with specific hospital standards on a continuing basis. If you, or your family, have any health needs then come let us serve you.
